A day in the life of Own Software Developer, Darko Suljic

Get to know one of our technology wizards.

We’ve been launching new products and features left, right and centre these past few months, so it seems appropriate that we introduce you to some of the team members who’ve been hard at work behind the scenes.

Here’s an insight into a day in the life of Darko Suljic, one of Own’s talented Software Developers at our Sarajevo office…

Do you have a morning routine?

Usually I get up at 7:00am, grab a quick shower, feed my cat and then have a leisurely coffee while reading the news and checking my emails.

I live quite near to our office so I try to get in between 8:30am and 9:00am – it’s either a 15-minute tram ride or I split a cab with our UI Designer, Neza.

How do you structure your working day?

We are constantly creating new things at Own, so every day we do something different. I’m part of the FAST Platform development team, and I relish the challenge of constantly having new features to work on.

Each morning we have a ‘daily scrum’ meeting at 9:30am, which lasts around 15 minutes. Everyone will update each other on our progress and we will decide how to break down upcoming tasks. After this we might have some breakout meetings, but usually we’ll jump straight into development work until lunchtime.

As we’re based in the city centre we like to take a proper break at lunch and go out for a quick bite and a cup of coffee – often in the park next to our office.

The afternoon tends to be devoted to longer tasks, as we don’t have meetings taking up our time like we do in the morning. I prefer to leave tasks that require more thinking to the afternoon because of this. I like to get my head down until sometime between 5:00pm and 6:00pm when I finish up for the day. I also make a point of trying to finish all my work at the office, so that I don’t have to bring any of it home.

How do you know it’s been a good day at the office?

I think you know when you’ve had a good day as you have that positive feeling inside. We also respond really well to feedback on our work; when we’ve delivered a new feature and received a strong community response, it motivates us and shows us that we’re heading in the right direction.

What do you do to relax

After a hard day’s work I like to let off some steam by meeting friends for a drink, or to play some board games. I also enjoy spending time with my family.

If you’d like to join Darko creating innovative financial services technology, we’re always looking for talented developers to expand our team. Visit our careers page to find out more.
